  1. Happy New Year!

May 2022 bring you happiness, health, and goodness!

2. Ten Things to Do To Start The New Year Off Right.

If you are still working, raise your retirement savings.  Using tax favored retirement accounts is a good choice.  Until April 22, 2022, you can deposit as much as $7,000 into a traditional or Roth IRA.

If you have a 401{k} and you are not currently contributing, tell your HR people you want to start contributing with every paycheck.

Reassess your budget.  Make sure your monthly spending is less than your monthly income. Your needs may be far different than before the pandemic.

Make a home movie.  A movie or photographic inventory of all your possessions will be invaluable in the event of a catastrophic disaster.  Store the video or still photographs in the cloud so the record of your possessions can be retrieved at a later time if/when needed.

Consolidate and simplify.  If you have acquired a number of retirement or investment accounts from previous employers, track down those accounts and weigh the benefits of consolidating them.

Find tax-smart ways to give to charities. Giving to non-profits can benefit you at federal tax time.  Giving to schools and local charities may allow you to receive dollar for dollar back from the state.

Eliminate your paper trail.  Gather together all of your old financial and medical documents that you no longer need, and shred them to protect your identity.

Clear out your flexible spending account.  If you contribute pretax money to a health care flexible spending  account, you may loose all o the money you have not used by the end of the year.

Review your legal paperwork.  Set aside some time to reread your will, power of attorney, estate plans and other legal documents to see if they are up to date and still reflect your wishes.  Do they still fit the needs of your family changes?

Reassess your priorities.  The pandemic has changed the goals of many. Remember the pandemic of the 1800’s took ten years to clear from the general population, so this thing may not be over in 2022.  Tim Maurer, a financial planner in Charleston, South Carolina suggests organizing in at lest four different categories: relationships, wellness, interest, and work.

3. C’mon Man! If Covid-19  Omicron isn’t bad enough, Scientists have detected infection by at least three variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 in free-ranging white-tailed deer in six northeast Ohio locations, the research team has reported.

Watershed Info 1130 EnviroInsight

Previous research led by the U.S. Department of Agriculture had shown evidence of antibodies in wild deer. This study, published today (Dec. 23, 2021) in Nature, details the first report of active COVID-19 infection in white-tailed deer supported by the growth of viral isolates in the lab, indicating researchers had recovered viable samples of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and not only its based on genomic sequencing of the samples collected between January and March 2021, researchers determined that variants infecting wild deer matched strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that had been prevalent in Ohio. Sample collection occurred before the Delta variant was widespread, and that variant was not detected in these deer. The team is testing more samples to check for new variants as well as older variants, whose continued presence would suggest the virus can set up shop and survive in this species.

The fact that wild deer can become infected “leads toward the idea that we might actually have established a new maintenance host outside humans,” said Andrew Bowman, associate professor of veterinary preventive medicine at The Ohio State University and senior author of the paper.”It could complicate future mitigation and control plans for COVID-19.”  Source: “Science Daily”

5. Scientists Invent A Protein-Rich Product Made From Plants That Could Replace Dairy And Eggs In Certain Foods.

Date:  December 22, 2021

Source:  Nanyang Technological University

A team of scientists from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has developed a plant-based emulsifier that is not only rich in protein and antioxidants, but has the necessary properties to replace eggs or dairy in food staples such as mayonnaise, salad dressings, and whipped cream.

Emulsifiers are crucial for food production, as they help stabilise a combination of two liquids that do not mix easily, such as oil and water. For example, egg yolk is often used as the emulsifying agent in mayonnaise to ensure that the oil and water it contains does not separate. The NTU-made emulsifier also helps cut down on food waste, as it is made by fermenting brewers’ spent grain, a by-product of the beer-making industry. It is estimated that globally, around 39 million tons of such spent grains are thrown into landfills yearly, where it would decompose and add to greenhouse gas emissions.

Compared to store brand mayonnaise, the mayonnaise produced with the NTU-plant-based emulsifier contained more protein, and higher amounts of certain essential amino acids. The fat and calorie contents were similar compared to typical store brand mayonnaise, but the NTU-made mayonnaise contained more nutrients and antioxidants.  Read more at the December 22, 2021  “Science Daily”.

6. In Case You’ve Consumed Too Much: 7 Hangover Cures to Recover From New Year’s Eve.  Every year on January 1, we usher in New Year’s Day, which is also (unsurprisingly) National Hangover Day. Even though our New Year’s Eve celebrations may be small and at home with some heavy hors d’oeuvres, that doesn’t mean we won’t be merrymaking, giving 2020 a proper sendoff with champagne toasts and a few drinks ahead of a three-day weekend (cheers to that!).

Happy New Year!

Feeling good the next day, however, is another story. Finding a surefire way to avoid a classic katzenjammer is like finding the Holy Grail—or at least a convenient parking space in New York City. Throughout the pandemic, folks have been drinking more, so a solution would probably be warmly welcomed. Even Cardi B wants to know how she can power through on New Year’s Day, so it’s safe to say many are curious.

Hydrate

If you feel nauseated, are vomiting and/or are sweating on the morning after, you may be dehydrated. WebMD recommends drinking a glass of water before you go to bed, and a glass of water when you wake up. Electrolyte-packed sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade can also help your body replenish sodium, potassium and other electrolytes lost while merrymaking.

Eat Breakfast

WebMD points out that drinking lowers your blood sugar, which explains why some folks wake up dizzy after a night of boozing. Having something to eat when you get up will give you energy. Even a couple slices of toast or some crackers can help you feel human again.

Hair of the Dog

Harvard Health Publishing notes that what we feel after a night of heavy drinking is alcohol withdrawal, which is why drinking the following day may help. Although another drink may make you feel better, it won’t help you throughout the day as effectively as other options. “The hair of the dog just perpetuates a cycle,” Dr. Robert Swift, a researcher at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School, said. “It doesn’t allow you to recover.”

Get Plenty of Sleep

Feeling hungover and can afford to go back to sleep? Do it! According to WebMD, alcohol “disrupts sleep.” Any amount of sleep you get after a night imbibing might not be as restful as you’d hope. So if you can get a few extra hours of shuteye, you might as well roll back to sleep.|

Exercise a Little

Take a short walk should set you straight. However, if you’re hurtin’ for certain, sit outside and breathe in the fresh air.
