2. WRCC Registration for the WRRC Annual Conference, “Water at the Crossroads: The Next 40 Years”, is open at the special early bird rate of $110, with a student rate of only $50. Thank you to our sponsors for making these low rates possible! Because this year’s conference will explore a number of comprehensive water management topics, our conference planning committee thought it would be useful to hold a series of background webinars to refresh our knowledge and found our discussion on a common base of information. The seminars will provide an overview of the Groundwater Management Act, fill us in on the Governor’s Water Augmentation, Innovation, and Conservation Council with an emphasis on the Desalination Committee, and offer updates about CAP-connected management efforts, including the Drought Contingency Plan, water recovery and wheeling, and the Central Arizona Groundwater Replenishment District.

The conference is on Friday, March 27, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Black Canyon Conference Center, 9440 North 25th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85021.  For more information, go on line to https://wrrc.arizona.edu/wrrc-conference-2020?utm_source=WRRC+Weekly+Wave%2C+Vol.+7%2C+Issue+33+%2812%2F20%2F19%29+&utm_campaign=WW-12-20-19&utm_medium=email

4. Don’t Fill Your Pool With Toilet Water. This is a  great time of the year to check your toilet for leaks. A leaking toilet can consume as much as 10,000 gallons of water a year. Check your toilet by doing the following:

  • Remove the tank lid and any toilet cleaners

  • Drop a few drops of food coloring into the tank

  • Wait 15 minutes, do not use the toilet.  If color appears in the bowl, you have a leak
  •  5. Agua Fria Winterfest. Take in the Winterfest at Black Canyon Heritage Park, Saturday, January 25, 2020, from 10 til 2, check out the last day of the Waterways Exhibit at the Canon School which opens at noon and the meet at 2:30 there to brainstorm how UAFWP can fashion our 2020 goals to build upon and be inspired by the Waterways Exhibit: continuing water awareness, Agua Fria as a ‘Ribbon of Green’ with Points of Pride, a 2020 Waterfest, vigilance regarding projects that may affect water quality and quantity, and all other ideas!

    6. What’s Your “Normal” Blood Pressure?  Did your last visit to your doctor indicate that your “normal “ blood pressure was something like 98.6˚.  Well, according to Standford University and the University of Maryland, those numbers are no longer “normal”.  ”Normal” body temperature is now officially recognized as 97.5˚ Let your doctor know. I’m quite sure he/she does not know    Source:  Wall Street Journal

    7. What Is the Most Eco-Friendly Pen?  It’s hard to recycle pens. Here’s what to keep in mind. At work, I go through a lot of disposable pens from companies like Bic and Paper Mate. Can these be recycled? How much waste do they produce? Is there a case to make for bringing back the fountain pen as an alternative? Bic sells an average of 57 pens per second. It’s hard to recycle pens because they’re too small for machines to sort and they’re made of hard-to-separate materials. You can pay Terracycle to downcycle pens, pencils, and markers (and almost anything) into things like benches. It’d be greener if they would recycle pens into pens.

The Greenest Pen award (drumroll please) goes to Bonnie’s Bits and Things. She collects bamboo (a weed) from people who don’t want them. She teaches kids to dip 100-percent bamboo pens in soy sauce because it doesn’t stain. The greenest My Boss Might Let Me Use this link award goes to The Constant Forager who uses walnuts she forages, lists all ingredients (which sound edible), and packs inkwells with lichen instead of plastic padding. I asked if both would ship in reused (even ugly) packaging. She said yes! The next greenest pens are Pilot’s B2P refillable pens made with 89-percent post- consumer recycled waste from plastic bottles (the highest percent I found). But each nonrecyclable refill comes in plastic packaging. If you have the budget, you can try piston-fill fountain pens with a window showing the ink level. Avoid ones with single-use ink cartridges, which are nonrecyclable. According to economist Jonathan Deans, it’s hard to say if they’re greener than Bic nonrefillable pens. Also, pens in general might be made with metals from polluting mines with human rights violations.  Bamboo crafted pens by Riun Ex Recycled bottle pen by YAFA Biodegradable Corn Starch plastic by ACME Studios Inc. Sustainably Made. Writes 1.7 meters a day for seven years by Seltzer Eco Solution ReAction pen by BIC Eco Friendly, Innovative, Inkless Metal Pen by Jac Zagoory .
